Program Description

More than 150,000 obese patients undergo bariatric surgery in the United States annually. Many of these people are going to be women who will become pregnant. Dr. Colleen Kelly, a gastroenterologist at Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, joins host Dr. Lauren Streicher to discuss this growing patient population. The two discuss which surgical option is best for a woman who wants to conceive, along with nutritional guidlines, complications, and of course the health of the baby.

As you know, there is a very high rate of obesity in this country. The majority of people in the US are overweight and now obesity rates are above 30% and we know that obesity does pose risks in pregnancy, not limited to gestational diabetes and hypertension and we know that bariatric surgery is highly effective as a treatment of obesity and its complications; more effective in fact than diet, exercise, and other medical management of obesity. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology does advocate weight loss prior to conception, and does acknowledge bariatric surgery as a promising obesity treatment.
