ReachMD Launches Series Focusing on Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis

“Perspectives on Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis” features expert opinions and commentary to help clinicians understand the growing medical, financial, and caregiver burdens of this distinct clinical illness.

Fort Washington, PA, April 28, 2015

More than 50% of patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) will develop psychosis at some point over the course of their disease, and clinicians are challenged by a spectrum of symptoms that worsen as the disease progresses. ReachMD, the 24/7 health education and information broadcast network, announces the launch of a series dedicated to PD psychosis, featuring interviews and commentary from renowned medical experts in PD, movement disorders, and psychiatric conditions.

The new series titled Perspectives on Parkinson’s Disease Psychosis is hosted by Anthony Alessi, MD, and is designed to help clinicians:

  • Understand PD psychosis and how it is defined
  • Recognize the distinct clinical profile not shared by other psychotic syndromes
  • Evaluate epidemiology and risk factors for PD psychosis
  • Comprehend the burden on patients and their caregivers
  • Identify PD psychosis symptoms and pathophysiology
  • Assess the challenges in screening and diagnosis
  • Focus on patient management including the role of patient and caregiver education

“Parkinson’s disease psychosis can be devastating to patients and causes substantial burden on families and caregivers,” said Alessi. “PD psychosis is a contributor to nursing facility admissions and emergency department visits for PD patients. This series comes at the right time to help clinicians understand the growing importance of this serious condition.”

Matt Birnholz, MD, Vice President and Medical Director of ReachMD, said “ReachMD has a strong history of offering education on neurological and psychiatric conditions. This new series will have six distinct episodes that will greatly impact the knowledge and awareness of many of our healthcare professionals.”

The series, sponsored by ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc., is intended for healthcare providers and is not accredited for continuing medical education (CME).
