Benjamin A. Weinberg, MD
Benjamin A. Weinberg, MD
  • Associate Professor of Medicine
  • Attending Physician
  • MedStar Health
  • Washington, D.C
Dr. Weinberg is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology, in the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) at Georgetown University, specializing in gastrointestinal oncology and sarcoma. A native of Bethesda, Maryland, he graduated from Sidwell Friends School in northwest Washington. He received his undergraduate degree in biomedical science at the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He went on to complete his post-graduate medical training with a residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology and oncology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Weinberg is interested in developing new therapies for colorectal and pancreatic cancers by translating research from animal models into early phase clinical trials in humans. During his fellowship, Dr. Weinberg worked closely with Dr. Michael Pishvaian to develop a clinical trial for patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer resistant to standard chemotherapies. The study combines two pills: ribociclib, a CDK4/6 inhibitor FDA approved for use in breast cancer, and everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor FDA approved for multiple types of cancer. This combination has been shown to be effective in treating pancreatic cancer in animal models. Dr. Weinberg was awarded a 2016 Conquer Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award in connection with this work, and the clinical trial is ongoing. Dr. Weinberg is also interested in studying young patients with colorectal cancer in order to understand the dramatic rise in incidence of left-sided colon and rectal cancers in this population. Multiple projects utilize the Caris Life Sciences® database of colorectal cancer tumor genetic profiles. These studies compare the molecular signatures between left- and right-sided colorectal cancers and between young and older patients with colorectal cancer. Dr. Weinberg also seeks to understand how gut bacteria are impacting the rise of colorectal cancer in young people. Throughout his medical career, Dr. Weinberg has worked exhaustively to make sure that patients are heard and that they receive the highest quality of care. His training as a resident and fellow at Georgetown leads him in the pursuit of cura personalis (“care for the whole person”), and he brings this mindset every day into the clinic and all his work with patients.
