Bert Mandelbaum, MD

    Dr. Bert Mandelbaum is the president of the Santa Monica Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Research Foundation in Santa Monica, California. He is also the principal investigator of the ACL Prevention Project, with results published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine.

    Dr. Mandelbaum has worked with the United States men's soccer national team since 1991, serving as team physician during the World Cup in 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006. He served as chief medical officer for the 1999 and 2003 Women's World Cup of Soccer. He holds an appointment on the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Medical Assessment and Research Committee. He has been the medical director of Major League Soccer since its inception in 1996. Dr. Mandelbaum is also team physician for the Pepperdine University athletic program, and he continues to serve on the USA Gymnastics Sports Medicine Advisory Board.

    In 2006, Dr. Mandelbaum was honored with the prestigious Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award, presented by the United States Sports Academy. Past non-physician winners include the famous four-minute-mile runner, Roger Bannister, and five-time Olympic speed skating gold medalist, Eric Heiden.

    After earning his medical degree from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Dr. Mandelbaum completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, and his sports medicine fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
