Dr. Brian Garra is the vice chair of the radiology department at Fletcher Allen Health Care, University of Vermont College of Medicine. He is the recipient of the John P. and Kathryn H. Tampas Green & Gold Professorship Award and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine Presidential Recognition Award. Prior to his appointment at the University of Vermont, Dr. Garra served as director of the ultrasound department in the School Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center. Dr. Garra completed his residency training at the University of Utah School of Medicine, and spent three years as an army radiologist in Germany.
Dr. Garra's research interests include digital signal processing, quantitative ultrasound, and elastography. He is currently chair of the FDA radiological devices panel and has been involved in the approval of several new technologies including the high resolution breast ultrasound, the first digital mammographic system, the first computer-aided detection system for mammography, and the first computer aided nodule detection system for chest radiographs.
