Charles Bernstein, MD

    Dr. Charles Bernstein received his MD from the University of Manitoba in 1985 and certified in internal medicine 1989 (FRCPC and ABIM) at the University of Manitoba and in Gastroenterology in 1991 (FRCPC and ABIM) at UCLA. He held a faculty position at UCLA in 1991-1993 until taking a position at the University of Manitoba in 1993.

    He is currently professor of medicine, head, section of gastroenterology, director of the University of Manitoba Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinical and Research Centre.

    From 2003-2008 he was director of the University of Manitoba fellowship training program in gastroenterology. He has been the Scientific Secretary of the International Organization for the study of IBD since 2007. His main research interests are in exploring predictors of clinical outcomes and disease etiology in inflammatory bowel disease. He has had continuous grant support from the CIHR and the preceding national research funding bodies (formerly NHRDP and MRC). He has been continuously funded by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) since 1995. He held an investigator award with CIHR from 2001-2006. From 2001-2006 he held one of the inaugural CCFC Research Scientist Awards. His award was renewed from 2006-2011. In 2008 he was elected into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In April, 2009 he was named the inaugural Bingham chair in gastroenterology at the University of Manitoba.
