In 1998, Dr. Nichols was named as head of the division of hematology and medical oncology at Oregon Health & Science University (OSHU) Cancer Institute. He was also associate director of the institute’s Cancer Clinical Research program and professor of medicine, hematology and medical oncology at OHSU, until joining Providence Portland Medical Center in 2007.
Dr. Nichols successfully treated seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong for testicular cancer in the late 1990s, and serves as the secretary and a member of the board of directors for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. He is also a member of the board of trustees for the Oregon chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Dr. Nichols received his medical degree from OHSU in 1978. After completing his internal medicine residency in New Orleans, he received further training in hematology and oncology at Indiana University. His main clinical and research interests are in the management of patients with testis cancer, Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
