David A Smith MD, FAAFP, CMD, is professor of family medicine at the College of Medicine at Texas A&M University, College Station; and president of Geriatric Consultants of Central Texas in Brownwood, Texas.

Dr. Smith is a graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He did an interdisciplinary fellowship in geriatrics with Dakota Plains Education Center. Dr. Smith is a past president of American Medical Directors Association and currently serves on the AMDA Behavioral Medicine Task Force. He co-chaired the AMDA led and multi-organizational meeting that gave input into the development of the Guidance to Surveyors concerning Psychotropic drugs that was part of the OBRA'87 regulations. 

Dr. Smith has authored a number of journal articles and book chapters on the subjects of dementia, neuropsychiatry and psychotropic medications in the elderly. Most recently he co-authored the chapter on delirium and dementia in Rakel's Textbook of Family Medicine.
