E.J. Mayeaux, Jr., MD, DABFP, FAAFP, DABPM

    E.J. Mayeaux, Jr., MD, DABFP, FAAFP, DABPM has been appointed professor and chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of South Carolina (USC) School of Medicine. He is also Chairman of the Palmetto Health USC Medical Group Department of Family Medicine.

    A Louisiana native, Dr. Mayeaux obtained his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and a medical degree from Louisiana State Medical Center in Shreveport. He completed his residency training in the Department of Family Medicine at Louisiana State Medical Center. He later became board certified in preventive medicine–clinical informatics.

    Prior to joining USC, Dr. Mayeaux worked for 23 years in the Department of Family Medicine at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport. He served as vice-chairman and residency director of the department. In addition, he is a Professor of Family Medicine and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

    Dr. Mayeaux is a well-respected educator, skilled clinician and acclaimed author. He has published and edited 7 books including the Color Atlas of Family Medicine and the Essential Guide to Primary Care Procedures, both of which are available in multiple languages. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a diplomate of the American board of preventive medicine. He is currently on the executive board of ASCCP and was President of the society in 2014. He was the lead editor of Modern Colposcopy, the flagship publication on colposcopy from the ASCCP.

    Dr. Mayeaux’s clinical expertise includes women’s health topics such as cervical disease, HPV disease, HPV vaccination, skin diseases and patient literacy as it relates to pediatrics, family practice and internal medicine.
