Eric Bouhassira, PhD
Eric Bouhassira, PhD

Dr. Eric Bouhassira is the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in the department of medicine and the department of cell biology. He is also the director of the Einstein Comprehensive Pluripotent Stem Cell Center.

Early in his career Dr. Bouhassira research programs were aimed at finding cures for sickle cell diseases.  He has made several important contributions related to the epigenetic control of gene expression in blood cells. Some of this work is being applied to develop better virus for gene therapy. In the last few years, he has become interested in human embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells and their differentiation in adult erythroid cells. His lab has developed novel methods to produce in vitro large amounts of fully differentiated erythroid cells from human embryonic stem cells.

Currently, one major focus of his lab is to refine these methods toward industrial-scale production of red blood cells for transfusion, as well as to use these genetically modifiable and genetically homogeneous cells to test gene therapy cassettes and drugs that can be used to treat sickle cell disease, to study gene regulation during erythroid development, and to better understand early human erythropoiesis.

Dr. Bouhassira obtained his doctoral degree in 1989 from the University of Paris.
