Gary D. Steinberg, MD
  • Professor of Urology
  • NYU Grossman School of Medicine
  • Director
  • Urology Bladder Cancer Program

Dr. Gary Steinberg is professor of urology, vice chairman of urology in the department of surgery, and director of urologic oncology at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Dr. Steinberg earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago, and completed his internship, residency and fellowship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Steinberg completed his training at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1991.

Dr. Steinberg has performed over 900 radical cystectomies for bladder cancer since joining the University of Chicago faculty in 1994. The majority of these have been followed with continent urinary diversion, and he prefers this as the procedure of choice in both men and women undergoing radical cystectomy. He has performed several hundred orthotopic bladder reconstructions to the urethra in men and women and routinely performs an anatomic nerve sparing radical cystectomy with orthotopic bladder replacement in less than four hours. This has decreased intra-operative blood loss, complications, post-operative intensive care unit admission, and length of hospitalization. The functional results in both men and women are excellent with preservation of both urinary and sexual function, and, thus, a significantly improved quality of life for these patients.

Furthermore, Dr. Steinberg has extensive experience with radical cystectomy after previous pelvic radiation therapy for prostate or bladder cancer as well as complicated reconstruction for patients with ureteral obstruction, incontinence, urethral recurrence and fistula formation after radical cystectomy. In addition, Dr. Steinberg coordinates the clinical trials for the section of urology at the University of Chicago and currently is enrolling patients in several innovative National Cancer Institute- and industry-funded studies for patients with bladder cancer. These include trials for patients with recurrent non-muscle invasive bladder cancer refractory to intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), chemoprevention of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, intravesical chemotherapy for recurrent low-grade, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and adjuvant therapy for patients with invasive bladder cancer based on p53 tumor suppressor oncogene status.

In addition, Dr. Steinberg is chairperson of the scientific advisory board of the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, as well as the planning committee of the annual Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Bladder Cancer Think Tank meetings. He was recently recognized by the Journal of Urology as the "Best Reviewer" for his peer review of bladder cancer articles submitted to the Journal of Urology for publication. Furthermore, the Society of Urologic Oncology has awarded Dr. Steinberg and the University of Chicago an accreditation for Urologic Oncology Fellowship training.

Dr. Steinberg has been recognized on many lists of top doctors, including Connoly and Castle and Chicago Magazine for a number of years.
