Jeffrey M. McFarlane, ARNP
Jeffrey M. McFarlane, ARNP

Jeffrey M. McFarlane is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Vero Beach, Florida. He started his career in nursing at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida, graduating with an Associates degree in Nursing Sciences in 1997. From there he went to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he obtained his Baccalaureate degree in Nursing Sciences. Following this, he returned to Florida and gained a Masters degree in Nursing Sciences from Florida Atlantic University. He currently holds AANP National Board Certification in family practice. He also gained certification in otorhinolaryngology from The National Certifying Board of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (NCBOHN).

Jeff started his nursing career in the emergency department in Johns Hopkins trauma center in Baltimore and from there branched out into Agency/Per Diem nursing which allowed him to work in dozens of hospitals in Maryland and Florida in just about every nursing role from OR, ICU, ER, to Med-Surg, pediatrics, and long term care units. After obtaining his ARNP licensure in 2004, he continued in the emergency room setting and then started working in an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) private practice as well as Urgent care walk-in clinics.

As if he wasn't busy enough, he started working on the V.I.A. project about 3 years ago after reading some research about vibration and the effect it can have on the perception of pain. As a healthcare provider who routinely uses needles for injections, IV's, and lab samples, he was fully aware of the pain and fear that needles can produce in the clinical settings. He also realized that the solutions currently offered were not very effective, unavailable, too slow, too expensive, or socially unacceptable. That was the point at which he set out to create a tool that would address these concerns and help reduce the fear, anxiety, and pain associated with needle usage in the clinical setting.

After a few years of prototyping, design changes, and vibration research he developed an effective first generation prototype which he calls the V.I.A. (Vibration Induced Analgesia) Comfort Clip. Currently, he is using the device for allergy shots, pediatric immunizations, lab draws, and joint pain related to arthritis, and injuries of the hand. It also is being used for pain management and physical therapy of the hands and wrists.

With continued success and positive feedback from users of the V.I.A., Jeff has been motivated to work on a second generation device that will build on what has been established as an effective concept. His hope in the V.I.A. project is to make a universal tool that will become a standard of practice with healthcare workers when it comes to pain control and patient comfort. Thus far, the V.I.A. has been a solo project, but he is preparing to present the V.I.A. to major medical device companies and/or private investors in an effort to launch the device into the next phase.
