Dr. Joel Saper is the founding director of the Michigan Head Pain and Neurological Institute in Ann Arbor and director of the Head Pain Treatment Program at Chelsea Community Hospital in Chelsea, Mich. He also is a clinical professor of medicine in the department of neurology at the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University.

Since 2004, Dr. Saper has been the national chair of the Pain Care Coalition, a position he also held from 1998 to 2000. From 1992 to 1994, Dr. Saper served as president of the American Council for Headache Education. Before that, from 1990 to 1992, Dr. Saper served as president of the American Headache Society, for which he also served as a member of the board of directors from 1980 to 1994.

Dr. Saper has been honored with the Distinguished Service Award from the American Academy of Pain, and is an Elected Regent of the American Headache Society. A fellow of the American College of Physicians and American Academy of Neurology, Dr. Saper has published more than 130 articles, and has lectured regionally, nationally and internationally

He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and his residency in the department of neurology at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
