John Byrne, MD

    Dr. John Byrne is the chair of cardiac surgery and the William S. Stoney Professor of Surgery at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Byrne's clinical interests include valve replacement and reconstruction, coronary revascularization, thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery, congestive heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical assist devices, and pulmonary embolectomy. His research interests include clinical outcomes based on patient data, particularly newer approaches to heart surgery such as minimally invasive valve surgery, and reoperative valve surgery, as well as risk factors for early and late adverse outcomes of other operations, so as to more carefully select patients for major open-heart procedures.

    Dr. Byrne earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine. He then served as an intern and junior resident in general surgery at the University of Illinois Affiliated Hospitals in Chicago, and a research fellow in cardiac surgery at Harvard Medical School. He returned to the University of Illinois to complete a term as administrative chief resident, and senior and chief resident, in general surgery, and subsequently as a resident and chief resident in cardiothoracic surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
