Joseph Murray, MD

    Dr. Joseph E. Murray is professor of surgery emeritus at Harvard Medical School and emeritus chief of plastic surgery at the Children's Hospital Boston and Brigham and Women's Hospital.

    Dr. Murray performed the first successful human kidney transplant in 1954 between identical twins, the first successful kidney allograft between brothers in 1959, and the first successful kidney graft from a cadaver in 1962. For these accomplishments he received the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1990.

    Long interested in congenital facial anomalies in children, he performed the first mid-face advancement in the United states, in 1975.

    Dr. Murray is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an honorary fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England, Ireland, Edinburgh, Canada and Singapore.
