Patrick O'Neal, MD

    Dr. J. Patrick O'Neal is the preparedness director in the Georgia Division of Public Health, where he oversees EMS, trauma, injury prevention, and emergency preparedness.

    Dr. O'Neal completed an undergraduate degree in pre-med at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, and received his medical education at the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Following medical school, he completed a rotating internship at Providence Hospital in Portland, Oregon, prior to entering the United States Air Force for training in flight medicine. Dr. O'Neal served as a flight surgeon in Viet Nam in 1970-71.

    Upon his return to civilian life, Dr. O'Neal served in Macon, Georgia, as the director of the outpatient clinic at the Medical Center of Central Georgia for two years. In 1973, he entered the practice of emergency medicine at Dekalb Medical Center in Decatur, Georgia, in l973, and practiced at that facility for 29 years.

    Upon retiring from the post of medical director of Dekalb Medical Center's emergency Department in 2002, Dr. O'Neal became the medical director for the Office of EMS/Trauma in the Georgia Division of Public Health, where he is now the preparedness director.
