Robert Brzyski, MD, PhD
Robert Brzyski, MD, PhD

    Dr. Robert Brzyski earned his PhD in physiology 1981 and his MD in 1983 from St Louis University. He completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital in 1987, and in 1989 he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine, which pioneered in vitro fertilization (IVF) technology and was responsible for the first IVF baby born in the United States.

    He is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and subspecialty certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. He is currently associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and is the director of the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, Texas. He holds the Frank Harrison Chair in Reproductive Medicine. He is the director of the fellowship program in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, which is approved by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is medical director of the South Texas Fertility Center and Director of the IVF Program there. He is principal investigator of the local field center of the Women's Health Initiative, the largest clinical trial ever funded by the National Institutes of Health. He is also principal investigator of the local Reproductive Medicine Network Clinical Center, one of only seven such U-10 sites funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

    Dr. Brzyski's special interests include assisted reproductive technologies, polycystic ovary syndrome, and reproductive ethics. His interest and expertise in ethics have led to his appointment as chair of the Ethics Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), the premier professional society devoted to reproductive medicine in the world. His activities in this regard have included co-chairing a series of NICHD funded workshops in Reproductive Medicine and Law, co-sponsored by the American Association of Law Schools. He is also a faculty associate of the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics at the Health Science Center and has participated in numerous educational activities directed by the Center since its inception.

    His expertise has been recognized in his selection as one of the first School of Medicine Veritas leaders, who provide mentorship and professional development to students throughout their four years on campus. He also has served as president of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology, whose members constitute over 90 percent of the providers of in vitro fertilization and related technologies in the United States.
