Stephan Poulter, PhD
Stephan Poulter, PhD

Dr. Stephan B. Poulter, author of the March 2008 book, The Mother Factor, is a licensed clinical family psychologist with a private practice in West Los Angeles. He has worked in various settings with thousands of families, parents and children for over 30 years.

The Mother Factor follows as an exciting companion piece to his acclaimed recent work, The Father Factor, (May 2006) a book that explores the father-child relationship in the context of the five most common fathering styles, and the subsequent impact fathers have in their child's future career development.

Before he became a psychologist, Dr. Poulter attended theological seminary. Following that, he attended graduate school and served as a police officer with the city of Glendale, California where he worked with at-risk juveniles, primarily young (12- to 21-year-old) male criminal offenders, in programs designed to redirect their anger and salvage their futures.

This work sparked his realization that America is facing an epidemic of fatherless boys and that rage, pain, and violence is the result. It motivated Dr. Poulter to give up the ministry and pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology with an emphasis on adolescent male development.

After completing his doctoral dissertation, "Misdiagnosis of Acting-Out Adolescents," he ran a United Way counseling agency and oversaw school interventions for at-risk students within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
