Dr. Steven M. Handler is assistant professor with a primary appointment in the department of biomedical informatics and secondary appointments in geriatric medicine, and clinical and translational research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Handler is also core faculty of the RAND-University of Pittsburgh Health Institute (RUPHI) and a research scientist at the Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.
Dr. Handler is a practicing geriatrician with direct patient care and medical director responsibilities in the nursing home setting. He serves as the medical director for long-term care health information technology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
Dr. Handler's primary research area focuses on medication and patient safety primarily in the nursing home setting. His most recent research at the intersection of biomedical informatics and geriatrics focuses on the use of active medication monitoring systems to detect and reduce the number of adverse drug events among nursing home residents. His research is funded primarily by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
