Thomas Schwartz, MD

    Dr Thomas L. Schwartz, MD, received his medical degree from and completed his residency in adult psychiatry at the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York, where he was also named chief resident.

    Dr Schwartz is currently associate professor of psychiatry, director of adult outpatient services, and assistant director for residency training at SUNY Upstate Medical University, where he also directs the Depression & Anxiety Disorders Research Program. Active on many committees at SUNY, he also provides direct resident supervision, lectures in several courses, and directs and organizes continuing medical education events for the psychiatry department. Dr Schwartz also maintains a small private practice and consults for the Indian Health Service, Empire Medicare Part A, Excellus Depression Management, and Cephalon and Wyeth Pharmaceuticals.

    He is a member of American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, American, and Medical Society of the State of New York. Dr Schwartz's contributions to the field have been recognized with the Marc H. Hollander, MD, Psychiatry Award, Teacher of the Year, and Mentor of the Year awards from SUNY Upstate Medical University; Nancy Roeske, MD, Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Medical Student Education from the American Psychiatric Association; and he was named one of the Best Doctors in America and Best Psychiatrists in America in 2003-2004.

    Dr Schwartz has served as principle investigator on many clinical trials; his clinical and research interests include treatment-resistant depression and anxiety, psychosomatic illness, adult psychopharmacology, and antidepressant augmentation for efficacy and tolerability.

    He is the author of Depression: Treatment Strategies and Management and enjoys speaking in support of his research; he has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr Schwarz has served as peer reviewer for Women's Health in Primary Care, Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, Expert Review of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, Psychopharmacology, CNS Spectrums, American Journal of Managed Care, Depression & Anxiety, Academic Psychiatry and Archives of General Psychiatry.
