William Golden, MD

    Dr. William E. Golden is professor of medicine and public health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he served as director of the division of general internal medicine for nearly 20 years. He is currently the medical director for health policy at the Arkansas Department of Human Services and Medicaid. Prior to his current position he served for 16 years as vice president for clinical quality improvement of the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care for which he has designed numerous statewide quality improvement and health technology projects and for Medicare and Medicaid.

    A past chair the board of regents of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Golden served on the board of directors of the National Quality Forum from 2001-2004 and was president of the American Health Quality Association from 1997-2000. He has been a methodologist member of the AMA Physician Consortium for Performance Measurement for the last decade and currently sits on its executive committee. Among his awards and recognitions, he received the national James Q. Cannon award for physician leadership in clinical quality improvement (2001), special citation from UAMS for innovations in medical education related to his statewide quality improvement efforts (2005), and Mastership in the American College of Physicians (2008).

    A former president of the American Society of Internal Medicine, Dr. Golden has served on numerous national committees including chairmanships of the AMA Council on Medical Education, the liaison committee on medical education, the QNET office quality initiative and the board of directors of the Center for Clinical Quality and Evaluation. He has served on three committees of the Institute of Medicine as well as two study sections for the Agency for Health Care Quality and Research. Dr. Golden has served as a co-investigator on two grants from NIH and AHRQ to improve asthma care in the community setting. For the last twelve years, he has written a monthly column on clinical practice guidelines for Internal Medicine News.

    Dr. Golden graduated from Brown University with an undergraduate degree in health care delivery, an independent concentration. He received his MD from Baylor College of Medicine and his internal medicine training at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago where he was also chief resident. He is a former Morris Fishbein Fellow in medical journalism and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.
