    When considering the barriers impeding optimal employment of SDM on both the patient and provider side, coupled with the volumes of studies and data to reference, how can busy clinicians effectively and simply introduce SDM into day to day practice? How is it implemented into practice/patient care?

    In this video-based interview, 3 leading thoracic oncologists from MD Anderson and City of Hope provide practical, quick-win recommendations and best practices for effective shared decision making between physician and lung cancer patients, considerate of a real-world environment.

    This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and any clinicians involved in the care of lung cancer patients seeking out strategies to enhance their SDM.

  • Learning Objectives

    Goals
    Maximally utilize shared decision making to ensure the patient is continually being involved with regards to their priorities and preferences in their treatment/management discussion and that the physician is aware of and discussing up-to-date treatment practices. (Knowledge, Competence, Performance)

    Employ components of shared decision making for clinical application interfacing with patients. Outline communication strategies that will assist in gathering patient involvement while discussing goals and priorities of treatment. (Knowledge, Competence, Performance)

    Implement strategies and decision aids for patients to involve them in a collaborative treatment plan discussion that takes into consideration their treatment priorities and preferences. (Competence, Performance)

    Learning Objectives
    At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

    Discuss the steps of SDM and it role in the care of lung cancer patients. (Knowledge)

    Outline communication skills required to engage patients in SDM across the course of lung cancer, including diagnosis, prognosis, screening for and selection of treatment, and palliative care. (Knowledge, Competence)

    Implement strategies and decision aid methodologies to support individualized SDM. (Knowledge, Competence, Performance)
