    The Medicare donut hole, underemployment, and loss of employment can all put patients in situations that make affording lipid medications difficult to impossibl. Host Dr. Alan Brown talks to Dr. Carl Orringer, director of the Lipid Clinic and Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine Program at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, about strategies for working with patients who are having trouble affording their lipid medications. The solutions include pill-splitting when appropriate, discount drug stores, and novel recycled drug repository programs which are available in 38 states. What can we do to help patients whose financial circumstances do not only make medication adherence challenges, but are also related to an unhealthy diet and limited access to opportunities for physical activity.
