This is ReachMD, and you’re listening to Psoriasis: What’s Beneath the Surface, sponsored by Lilly.
From the ReachMD studios, I’m Dr. Matt Birnholz. On this episode, dermatologist, Dr. Stefan Weiss, reflects on a case of one patient’s 40-year search for effective treatment of psoriasis. Here’s what he shared.
So I had 1 patient who comes to mind who had suffered with psoriasis for about 40 years and had been on every available treatment up until the present day and had some horrible side effects with some of them. And mind you, this woman was living in Florida all this time and had horrendous plaque psoriasis that limited any of the activities that she would want to do being a Florida resident, i.e. the pool, the beach, wear shorts.
And so, eventually, one of the newest agents came out toward the early part of 2018. She was tried on that and was, within 2 weeks, cleared. And just watching her response to the response of that treatment and how she had never seen totally clear skin over a 40-year period was totally amazing. I mean, really, you get the opportunity in that situation to see how impactful not only that you are as a physician, but again how impactful these therapies are, and so I think that that often times gets lost in the greater discussion. When therapies of this nature are created, they are helping a great number of people, and having the opportunity to witness the sheer elation of this patient as her skin was completely clear validates the plethora of options that we have for psoriasis.
But there’s always going to be that 1 patient for whom what’s currently available is not working, and to know that there are options down the line for other patients who may have tried and failed the currently available options, that gives everybody hope.
That was dermatologist, Dr. Stefan Weiss. For ReachMD, I’m Dr. Matt Birnholz, inviting you to be part of the knowledge.
