This is ReachMD, and you’re listening to Psoriasis: What’s Beneath the Surface, sponsored by Lilly. On this episode, titled, Overviewing Key Statistics and Unmeet Needs we will hear from Dr. Stefan Weiss from Hollywood, Florida.
So, in terms of psoriasis, it’s roughly affecting 7 million individuals, a third of whom are thought to have moderate to severe psoriasis, and this is generalized plaque. The key statistic in reference to that is probably the 30% of individuals who suffer from psoriatic arthritis. And I think one of the big unmet areas of discussion is individuals that may have mild psoriasis but also have psoriatic arthritis, and then it becomes frequently under or undiagnosed if certain queries are not made regarding arthritis in that population. And so I think it becomes very important that all psoriasis patients, whether they have 40% body surface area or 4% body surface area—I think it becomes critical that all patients are asked if they have joint pain, because we do a disservice to our patients if we fail to diagnosis psoriatic arthritis early simply because they may have mild psoriasis.
