John Kennedy, MD

Dr. John Kennedy is an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He also is an assistant attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Dr. Kennedy graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1989. Since then he has practiced both in Ireland and in the United States. Dr. Kennedy's primary interest is lower limb surgery, particularly sports-related injuries, including fractures and soft tissue injuries of the foot and ankle. Other special interests are posterior tibial tendon reconstruction, repair of osteochondral lesions, and ankle instability, as well as tumors of the foot and ankle.

Dr. Kennedy is currently the clinical director of the running clinic in the gait laboratory at the Hospital for Special Surgery. This interest in sports medicine of the lower limb is generated by a long personal history in sports: Dr. Kennedy competed nationally and internationally in track, rugby, fencing, and water skiing.

As part of Dr. Kennedy's fellowship year, he was involved as assistant team physician for the football team at Boston College in 1994-95. Since then, Dr. Kennedy has been involved in the treatment of both recreational athletes, as well as elite competitors from the National Football League's New York Giants, Manhattan Rugby, and the National Basketball Referees Association. Dr. Kennedy's involvement in all aspects of lower limb sports injuries has led him to publish articles on running injuries, cycling injuries, and ballet injuries, and ankle instability following a range of sports injuries.
